• A case study of the response and recovery in western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene and other recent disasters. Chief Taylor will share his experiences with immediate needs of those areas affected, state and local code agencies authority and long-term needs of local inspection departments. Lessons learned from our neighbors to the north can help prepare building and fire code professionals in South Carolina for the likelihood of future natural disasters affecting our state.

• This seminar identifies those conditions under which automatic sprinkler protection and/or fire alarm systems are required. The application of the fire area concept will be discussed, along with the varying extent of sprinkler protection required based upon specific situations. In addition, the discussion will address many of the key code conditions under which the presence of an automatic sprinkler system can be used to modify other requirements. Specific topics include:  overview of fire protection systems, definition and application of fire areas, required sprinkler and alarm protection based on occupancy classification, and optional use of automatic sprinkler systems (goes through the code requirements for fire protection systems).

• This outreach program is designed to equip fire marshals, building officials, facility managers, and other key stakeholders with the knowledge necessary to understand and enforce NFPA 80 requirements for fire-rated door assemblies. Participants will gain foundational insights into the inspection, maintenance, and proper use of swinging fire doors with builders hardware, ensuring compliance and enhancing fire safety in the built environment.
